More than 250 million workers go on strike in India

More than 250 million workers from 10 trade union centers and independent sectoral federations went today on a 24-hour strike in India against government economic policies and labor reforms.

The trade unions said that the so-called Bharat Bandh aims at pressuring the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi with a 12-point common demand related to minimum wage and social security, among other things.

Despite the rain and cold, the Bharat Bandh was carried out in several states of the country, such as Odisha, Karnataka, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Bihar, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Jharkhand.

Delhi's industrial region also stood out, which comprises areas like Wazirpur, Okhla and Narela. Together with the trade unions, part of the banking and transportation sector, and hospital workers, as well as the agricultural sector, also took part in the strike.

Some of the striking groups are the Indian National Trade Union (INTUC); All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC); Hind Mazdoor Sabha (HMS); Center of Indian Trade Union (CITU); and Trade Union Coordination Center (TUCC).

Other groups are the Self-Employed Women's Association (SEWA); All India Central Council of Trade Unions (AICCTU); the Labor Progressive Federation (LPF); and the United Trade Union Congress (UTUC).
