The leader of the Nuevo Peru (New Peru, NP) movement, Veronika Mendoza, called on the population this Thursday to take to the streets to demand early general elections, to allow the people to resolve the current political crisis through their vote.
Mendoza thus confirmed the participation of NP in the national mobilization convened by over a hundred political and social organizations and citizen groups, which repudiate the mostly neo-liberal Parliament, opposed to the call for early elections presented by the government.
'This situation cannot be sustained. While the economy stagnates and life becomes increasingly precarious, the same old lobbyists and the corrupt have entrenched themselves in their posts behind the peoples' backs,' she underscored on social networks.
The leader added that it is clear the crisis will not be resolved by the elite, an apparent allusion to the dialogue on the elections and other issues initiated yesterday by President Vizcarra with the Chairman of Congress Pedro Olaechea.
The governmental proposal of bringing elections forward to 2020 triggered not only the demonstrations to support it, but also the conflict between the government and the neo-liberal parliamentary opposition.
The mobilization, which the slogan 'Get out,' directed at opposition parliamentarians, yesterday evening received the support of President Martin Vizcarra, who justified citizen outrage due to the majority neo-liberal bloc's maneuvers in Congress.
