Lula's Defense hopeful the Supreme Court will Overturn his Sentence

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's defense team is hopeful that the Federal Supreme Court (STF) will accept an habeas corpus today to overturn the sentences against the former Brazilian president, a political prisoner since April 2018.

Media reports revealed that attorney Cristiano Zanin held a meeting last week with STF Minister Edson Fachin to personally ask him to include the appeal's analysis in the second session of the superior court scheduled for Tuesday.

This new request is based on the August 27 decision in which the Supreme Court annulled the first sentence of the then Judge Sergio Moro against the former president of Banco do Brasil and Petrobras, Aldemir Bendine.

Now it is up to the president of the court, Minister Cármen Lucia, to include the habeas corpus examination in the agenda of the day.

In the hands of the judge is also the request of magistrate Gilmar Mendes, for all the appeals for Lula release to be resolved together, including the suspicion against Moro of acting impartially in the proceedings against the founder of the Workers' Party.

The defense requests in the appeal the annulment of two sentences imposed on the former president, based on a legal loophole opened by the STF.
