British trade unions reiterate solidarity with Cuba

The UK's Trade Union Congress (TUC) on Wednesday ratified its solidarity with Cuba, in the face of growing US hostility and the tightening of the unilateral blockade imposed on the Caribbean nation.

In an unanimously approved motion during the annual Congress held in Brighton, southern England, the organization representing 50 trade unions and nearly six million workers considered the recent anti-Cuban measures of the Trump administration alarming.

The text mentions particularly the activation of Title III of the Helms-Burton Act, aimed at impeding foreign investment, and the decision to limit family visits and remittances to Cuba.

After pointing out that these measures take the aggression and cruelty of US sanctions to unprecedented levels, the TUC describes them as an act of economic war aimed at causing tangible suffering to the Cuban people, with the objective of causing instability and disturbances on the island.

The document entitled 'Cuba and the US blockade' recognizes, however, that despite these actions and a almost 60-year long unilateral blockade, Cuba is currently exhibiting achievements recognized worldwide in education, health, social security, humanitarianism and women's representation.

The motion was introduced by the Professional Trades Union for Prison, Correctional and Secure Psychiatric Workers (POA), and supported by other unions affiliated to the TUC, in the presence of Ulises Guilarte, secretary general of the Cuban Workers' Federation (CTC), special guest to the Congress, and Cuban Ambassador to the UK, Teresita Vicente Sotolongo.
