Trump Postpones Meeting Danish Leader after Dispute over Greenland

US President Donald Trump announced he postponed a planned meeting with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen after the controversy generated by his interest in buying Greenland.

US media recently reported that Trump had indicated his desire that the United States purchase Greenland, which is an autonomous Danish territory, before the Republican president himself confirmed that he is considering the idea.

However, Danish and Greenland authorities repeatedly denied that the island is for sale, and the Danish prime minister told her country's press that Trump's interest in purchasing the island is absurd.

'Denmark is a very special country with incredible people, but based on Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen's comments, that she would have no interest in discussing the purchase of Greenland, I will be postponing our meeting scheduled in two weeks for another time,' Trump posted on Twitter Tuesday night.

Trump was scheduled to visit Denmark on September 2 after a trip to Poland, and was set to meet Queen Margrethe II, and other leaders and business officials. US media stated it was unclear why Trump would want the United States to purchase Greenland, although his administration has identified the Arctic as an increasingly important area for national security interests.
