The former member of the Manuel Rodriguez Patriotic Front (FPMR), Mauricio Hernandez, will serve 27 years in prison in Chile, Minister of Justice Hernan Larrain announced on Tuesday.
The Minister explained that the sentence is part of a deal with Brazil for the extradition of Hernandez, who was originally convicted to two life sentences and who was transferred to the High-Security Prison in this capital on Tuesday, after arriving in the country at dawn, amid heavy security measures.
Larrain explained that in order to make the extradition effective, Chile and Brazil agreed on what is established in the Mercosur treaty of 2012, and to comply with the sentence imposed by the Supreme Court of Brazil, according to which the inmate should not serve more than 30 years in prison, which was the sentence he was handed over in that country.
The Minister pointed out that Hernandez will serve 27 years, taking into account the three years he spent in the Maximum Security Prison of Santiago, where he is being held again, before escaping.
