Brazilian Minister under Investigation for Illicit Enrichment

The Public Ministry of Sao Paulo is investigating Brazilian Environment Minister Ricardo Salles for illicit enrichment, after his assets grew 335% between 2012 and 2017.

The earnings without legal justification came while Salles was accused of defrauding a management project in the basin of the Tiete river in 2016, when he was the Environment Secretary of Sao Paulo under the Geraldo Alckmin government.

Previously, in 2013 and 2014, the lawyer by profession had been Alckmin's private secretary.

Between 2012 and 2017, Salles's assets grew and his fortune skyrocketed from more than 340,000 to 2.17 million dollars.

The minister was sentenced in December 2018 by the Third Court of Public Finance of Sao Paulo for 'administrative impropriety' in the abovementioned case.

Salles was also sentenced for harassing officials who opposed the fraud.
