Iranian
President Hassan Rouhani accused the United States Saturday of attempting to
impose a "global hegemony" and denounced Washington for its maneuvers
to overthrow Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, who is an ally of the Islamic
Republic, according to Iranian state media.
"The
Americans are basically against all popular revolutions and independent
countries and seek global hegemony by suppressing them," Rouhani said in a
meeting with Venezuela's new envoy in Tehran, state news agency IRNA reported.
Iran has
expressed support for Maduro, who faces demands from the U.S. and member states
of the so-called Lima group and the European Union to step down after assuming
his second term last month. Russia, China, and Turkey have also backed the
socialist leader.
Rohani
stressed that he will continue to deepen bilateral relations with Venezuela, a
country he considers Iran's brother, in mutual support to neutralize U.S.
plans.
"The
relations between the two countries have been very good and close in recent years,
and continue under the mandate of President Nicolas Maduro, " said the
Iranian leader.
For his
part, the new Venezuelan ambassador in Tehran, capital of the Asian country,
added that "in this new conspiracy, we face world imperialism and the
Venezuelan people will win this fight."
The
appointment of Alcala as the main diplomat of Venezuela in Iran is for Rohani a
demonstration of the Venezuelan commitment in his fraternity with the nation,
said the president, who described the Bolivarian envoy as a very active and
effective figure of the Venezuelan government.
Washington
is at the head of most countries in America and Europe that reject the mandate
of Maduro and recognized the opposition leader and Juan Guaido as president in
charge of Venezuela.
"We
support the legitimate Government of Maduro and we are convinced that the
people of Venezuela will neutralize this conspiracy of the United States, as it
did with the previous ones, by means of unity and solidarity with the
Government," Iranian President Rohani expressed this Saturday his support
to the Bolivarian Revolution.
During an
act to receive the new ambassador of Venezuela in Iran, Carlos Alcala, the
Iranian president said that the actions that the U.S. has recently reinforced
against the South American country, belong to an agenda of domination against
the people.
"Americans
are basically opposed to all popular revolutions and independent states, and
they want to control the world by aborting their revolutions and eliminating
independent states."
The United
States and its right-wing allies in Latin America have come out in support of a
parliamentary right-wing coup against the Venezuelan government of President
Maduro after they supported a decision by opposition lawmaker Juan Guaido, to
declare himself an “interim president” of Venezuela on Jan. 23 in violation of
the country’s constitution.
The
military has repeatedly stated its full support for Maduro's government and
rejected such calls as interventionist and a breach of the sovereignty of
Venezuela.
In return,
Maduro has repeatedly called for the restoration of talks between his
government and the opposition in order to maintain peace and avoid a
U.S.-backed coup, or even military intervention by the United States in favor
of removing him and placing an unelected right-wing government.
