Yulimar Rojas won triple jump in 2017 World Athletics Championships

Venezuela's Yulimar Rojas took the gold medal in the triple jump competition of the 2017 World Athletics Championships in London, winning the first gold medal in Venezuelan history in this event.

The Olympic runner-up managed a jump of 14.91m in round five beating the Colombian Olympic champion Caterine Ibargüen, who jumped 14.89m and was left with the silver medal position.

The bronze medal was taken by Kazakhstan's Olga Rypakova, after stretching to 14.77m. The three jumpers repeated the podium of the last 2016 Rio Olympic Games, with the difference that Ibargüen took gold and silver went for Rojas.

In the first round, the 21-year-old Venezuelan jumped 14.55m; in the second 14,82m and 14,83m in the third. Then she leapt 13.39m on her fourth attempt; took the lead with 14.91m in the fifth one and marked 14.50m in the sixth and last round.

The mark achieved by this statuesque athlete (1.92m or 6'3") is her second best record of the year, after the 14.96m she marked on June 2 at the International Athletics Meeting Jaen, Paraiso Interior, which was held in Andujar, Spain.

This year, in addition, Rojas had her first-ever win in the IAAF Rome Diamond League in June with a jump of 14.84m; and took the second place in Monaco with a jump of 14.72m.

She also got silver in June in the 2017 South American Championships in Athletics held in Asuncion, Paraguay, with 14.36m; and won gold in May at the International Meeting of Guadalupe (14.67m) and in the Copa del Rey and the Queen of Clubs of Madrid, with a jump of 14.79m.

Robeilys Peinado –joining the gold of Yulimar Rojas– took bronze this Sunday in the women's pole vault with a jump of 4.65m. That was the first medal for Venezuela in an World Athletics Championships.
