Govt. to plant over 4 million hectares to strengthen agri-food development

Caracas, 06 Abr. AVN.- To plant more than 4,800,000 hectares, intended for crop production, is the goal proposed this year by the national government, said Venezuela's president Nicolas Maduro.
"We are setting ourselves great goals in the plant area with the objective of satisfying domestic demand and moving into exporting. We started strategic partnerships with international investors under favorable win-win conditions for our country, the productive Venezuela," he said at the launch of the plan of planting and harvest Venezuela Cultiva 2017, in Calabozo, Guarico state.
He said this year all efforts will be concentrated in the Great Sovereign Supply Mission, a policy aimed at cleaning distribution channels and ensure optimal production of essential goods.
"We are in a strong alliance of production and supply. This year will be of the new post-oil economy. From 2017 onwards we will have to talk about the new era. We are building the new economy with a solid base in the countryside. No country has acquired the development without having solved countryside's problems," he said.
President Maduro said the goal of self-sufficiency in the production of rice seeds is being achieved.
"About 361,000 hectares will be cultivated," explained the Minister of Agricultural Production and Land, Wilmar Castro Soteldo, which will produce an average of 1,804,000 tons of paddy rice. This, after being transformed by the agroindustry, will generate 960,000 tons of white rice, enough to satisfy national demand.
