The National Assembly (Parliament) of Nicaragua approved an amendment to the partial reform of the Constitution to nullify foreign laws that “intend to impose” in the Central American country.
The deputies of the Assembly unanimously decided to modify article 12 of the Constitution. This decision was made during a special session commemorating the 48th anniversary of the Sandinista assault on the National Palace of Nicaragua on August 22, 1978.
“During this session held from the National Palace of Culture, where this historic feat was conceived, we unanimously approved adding to the Constitutional Reform Proposal the modification to article 12 to reaffirm that in our Blessed, Sovereign, and Always Free Nicaragua, no foreign legislation that intends to impose itself on the Will of our People has legal effect,” states a Parliament statement.
This constitutional measure shields the internal legal system from economic and political aggressions promoted unilaterally.
The president of the Legislative Power, Gustavo Porras, pointed out that the constitutional reform complies with the national defense guidelines presented by the head of state on July 19.
Porras reported that 92,832 people from 25 social sectors participated in the consultations on the modifications to the Magna Carta of Nicaragua. Face-to-face and virtual debates will continue with civil society organizations to draft the final opinion, seeking to popularly legitimize the project before its plenary vote to ratify the country’s legal sovereignty.
The constitutional reforms respond to a speech by co-president Daniel Ortega, who asserted weeks ago that “the story of parties put in place by the Yankees, put in place by the Somocistas, returning to power is over.”
In this regard, Ortega pointed out that laws will be worked on to put a stop to sectors that, with United States funding, seek to undermine peace and the achievements of the Sandinista National Liberation Front.
