The Historic Pact will mount a democratic and peaceful opposition to preserve acquired rights.
Through a live message to the Colombian people on Wednesday, Ivan Cepeda, the Historic Pact candidate, acknowledged the results of the elections held on Sunday, in which the far-right politician Bernardo De la Espriella emerged victorious with an advantage of less than 1% of the valid votes.
Cepeda acknowledged De La Espriella’s victory as the new president of the Republic. “I do so as an act of democratic responsibility and a contribution to peace, because we deeply believe in democracy and that political differences should be resolved through citizen participation and respect for institutions,” he said.
Despite this electoral setback, the Historical Pact has consolidated itself as the most organized political force in Colombia and will hold the largest bloc in Congress during the 2026-2030 presidential term.
This will allow progressive forces to “resist the onslaught of an extreme right emboldened” by U.S. President Donald Trump’s support, the newspaper El Pais noted, adding that “Cepeda will predictably lead the opposition from the Senate seat that Colombian law guarantees to the presidential finalist.”
With his characteristic calm and measured manner, Cepeda expressed the main guidelines that will guide him and his supporters in the coming years. Among the most important points of his message to Colombians are the following:
-. “We will not accept the violation of public freedoms, the stigmatization of social movements, or the attempt to treat youth and organized citizens as internal enemies.”
-. “We will resist any attempt at authoritarian subjugation and travel throughout the country to consolidate an alliance in defense of democracy, social rights, sovereignty, and nature.”
-. “We will mount a firm opposition to the new government… while remaining open to potential agreements if dialogue, mutual respect, and the common good are prioritized.”
-. “We will resist any attempt at authoritarian subjugation. We warn the new government: we will not allow any austerity policies that threaten the social transformations achieved by the Colombian people.”
-. “We will not tolerate threats or humiliation here. We are open to dialogue and hope to reach the agreements necessary for Colombia.”
-. “We will exercise a democratic, vigilant, and constructive opposition. We will embrace peaceful civil resistance and support the causes of youth, women, and farmers.”
-. “If De la Espriella chooses the path of dialogue, he will find in us every willingness to reach an agreement. We are half of Colombia and no one will be able to stop us.”
