Cuban officials advanced cooperation with Russia and reaffirmed support for BRICS initiatives during meetings at the St. Petersburg forum.
Cuba and Russia moved to strengthen their strategic partnership during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, where senior Cuban officials held a series of meetings focused on expanding cooperation in trade, investment, energy, transport and healthcare.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment Óscar Pérez-Oliva led the Cuban delegation’s agenda at the forum, reviewing the implementation of bilateral agreements and discussing new economic priorities between Havana and Moscow.
During talks with Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko, the two sides assessed the status of joint strategic plans, with particular attention to investment projects, commercial exchanges, energy cooperation and transportation initiatives.
Pérez-Oliva reaffirmed Cuba’s interest in deepening relations with Russia, while Chernyshenko highlighted the historic character of bilateral ties and the cooperation between both countries in addressing challenges linked to international sanctions.
The Cuban official also met with Russian Health Minister Mikhail Murashko to discuss opportunities for collaboration in the healthcare sector. Their discussions covered pharmaceutical production, specialist training and efforts to strengthen public health systems, areas in which Cuba and Russia have cooperated for decades.
Later, Pérez-Oliva participated in the forum’s main plenary session, chaired by Russian President Vladimir Putin and attended by leaders and representatives from several countries. During the event, he reiterated Cuba’s commitment to further strengthening ties with Russia and other strategic partners.
As part of the Cuban delegation’s activities, Alejandro Simancas, Deputy Director General for Bilateral Affairs at Cuba’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, took part in the panel “BRICS Development Prospects: Transformation and New Horizons.”
In his intervention, Simancas emphasized Cuba’s active commitment to the BRICS cooperation mechanism, which the country recently joined as an associate member. He also argued in favor of a more equitable, inclusive and multipolar international order.
Cuban representatives used the forum to condemn the impact of the U.S. economic, commercial and financial blockade on the island and expressed support for the BRICS ministerial declaration calling for the removal of such unilateral measures.
Pérez-Oliva described the blockade as the principal obstacle to Cuba’s development and reiterated that solidarity and mutual respect among nations are essential foundations for international relations.
The St. Petersburg International Economic Forum continues to serve as a platform for dialogue between emerging economies and established global powers. Cuba’s participation highlighted its economic priorities, its commitment to strategic partnerships and its support for a multipolar international system.
