Colombian authorities have strengthened security measures ahead of the June 21 presidential election, deploying more than 400,000 military and police personnel to safeguard the voting process across the country.
Defense Minister Pedro Sánchez announced the creation of a Unified Command Post (PMU) to coordinate security operations under the Democracy Plan, which will oversee public safety throughout the election. Members of the public security forces, who are not permitted to vote, will be responsible for protecting citizens and ensuring security during the electoral process.

The operation includes the deployment of 248,000 members of the Military Forces and the National Police in direct security roles, supported by an additional 160,000 personnel assigned to logistical and operational assistance.
Authorities have documented 21 threats against presidential candidates. The cases have resulted in 10 criminal investigations and judicial proceedings against 10 administrators of social media accounts accused of spreading hate messages and threats.
Military and police authorities have also identified 99 municipalities facing election-related risks. Forty-nine have been classified as vulnerable to public order disturbances, particularly in the departments of Cundinamarca, Valle del Cauca, Bolívar, Antioquia, Cauca and Tolima. Another 50 municipalities have been flagged because of potential irregularities affecting electoral transparency.
Security arrangements for the presidential candidates have also been reinforced. Authorities said protection plans are currently in place at 535 locations across the country considered critical to preventing incidents during the election.
