American Association of Jurists Condemns U.S. Sanctions and Trump’s Military Threats Against Cuba

The American Association of Jurists (AAJ) issued a scathing statement on Sunday backing Cuba and blaming U.S. sanctions for a cascading humanitarian emergency on the island, while also demanding the immediate devolution of the Guantánamo naval base and an end to Washington’s threats of military intervention.

The continental legal body, led by President Claudia V. Rocca and Secretary General Vanessa Ramos, said the measures imposed by the Trump administration have paralyzed essential services and inflicted “grave consequences” on the daily lives of ordinary Cubans.

The AAJ catalogued a sweeping list of impacts it attributes directly to the U.S. sanctions regime: nationwide power outages have become routine, clinical procedures are being canceled, intensive care units are operating at risk, and medicines requiring refrigeration are in critically short supply.

The organization added that both public and private transportation has been disrupted, several international airlines have suspended flights to and from the island, and agricultural production and food security have been severely compromised.

The group’s pronouncement arrives as international concern widens. The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has already expressed deep alarm over the effects of the U.S. measures on the fundamental rights of the Cuban people, a reaction the AAJ highlighted as part of a growing chorus of condemnation.

The jurists insisted that the sanctions’ reach across multiple sectors amounts to a collective punishment of the civilian population.
