Lawmakers Warn Escalation Could Trigger Global Crisis and Jeopardize U.S. Security.
On Sunday, Democratic Rep. Yassamin Ansari called for the immediate removal of U.S. President Donald Trump, who publicly threatened to attack vital infrastructure in Iran, a move that could trigger a global disaster.
“The 25th Amendment exists for a reason. The President of the United States is a deranged lunatic, and a national security threat to our country and the rest of the world,” she said, referring to the constitutional amendment that establishes the procedure for removing the president and allowing the sitting vice president to assume power.
Ansari’s statements came after the Republican leader posted an aggressive and offensive message on social media.
“Tuesday will be Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day, all wrapped up in one, in Iran. There will be nothing like it!!! Open the Fuckin’ Strait, you crazy bastards, or you’ll be living in Hell – JUST WATCH! Praise be to Allah,” said the U.S. president.
Trump’s ultimatum drew backlash in Congress, especially considering that the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran began by decision of Washington. Lawmakers warned that the threats put international security at risk.
Sen. Edward Markey urged Trump to pursue dialogue with Iran, noting that the war on Iran is driving up oil prices, harming the national economy, and putting the lives of U.S. troops at risk.
Sen. Elissa Slotkin, of Michigan, described it as “irresponsible and wrong” to indiscriminately attack civilians and destroy essential infrastructure such as bridges and power plants, recalling that Trump had said the war aimed to “help the Iranian people.” She also warned that the war on Iran is affecting the U.S. budget and worsening the country’s internal crisis.
Other lawmakers urged Republicans to oppose Trump’s plans, arguing that further military escalation will not reopen the Strait of Hormuz trade route, which accounts for about 20 percent of global oil and gas trade.
