FM Lavrov criticizes Washington’s policy toward the Caribbean nation.
On Wednesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov reaffirmed Russia’s support for the independence of Cuba amid threats from U.S. President Donald Trump toward the Caribbean country.
“Of course, like the People’s Republic of China, we provide support to Cuba: political, within the United Nations and in other forums, economic and humanitarian… We will continue to provide such assistance… I have no doubt,” he said at a press conference during his visit to Beijing.
Lavrov recalled the recent arrival in Cuba of the Russian tanker Anatoli Kolodkin with about 100,000 tons of oil as humanitarian aid. He also reaffirmed that Russia will continue providing assistance to Havana.
“I sincerely hope that the U.S. does not return to the times of direct colonial wars and the colonial repression of free peoples. But it was not Cuba that refused to engage in dialogue with Washington for decades. Washington did everything possible to isolate the Cuban state,” the Russian diplomat said.
Lavrov questioned Trump’s attempt to carry out a “regime change” by strangling the Cuban economy and recommended that the United States engage in dialogue with a government when it does not agree with it.
On Jan. 29, Trump declared a “national emergency” over the alleged “unusual and extraordinary threat” that Cuba would represent to the United States and the region.
His executive order accuses the Cuban government of aligning with “numerous hostile countries,” hosting “transnational terrorist groups,” and allowing the deployment on the island of “sophisticated military and intelligence capabilities” from Russia and China.
On March 7, Trump announced that “a major change will soon come to Cuba,” a country that is reaching “the end of the road.”
During a two-day visit that began on Tuesday, Lavrov met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, with whom he discussed issues such as the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran, the situation in the Asia-Pacific region and the conflict in Ukraine. Lavrov also met with President Xi Jinping.
