The U.S. President delays strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure.
On Monday, President Donald Trump said that the United States is in negotiations with a “respected” political figure in Iran.
However, he did not disclose the person’s identity but said the interlocutor is not Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, son of the slain Ali Khamenei.
“We are in contact with a high-ranking person. Do not forget: we have annihilated the first, the second and, to a large extent, the third phase of the leadership,” he said.
“But we are dealing with a man who I think is the most respected and the leader. You know, it is a bit difficult — they have been annihilated, we have annihilated them all,” Trump told reporters at Palm Beach airport in Florida.
“No, not with the supreme leader,” the U.S. president said in response to a reporter asking him to reveal the name. “We have not heard from the son. From time to time there are statements, but we do not know if he is alive.”
On the U.S. side, the talks have been led by Middle East special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law.
“They very much want to reach an agreement. We would also like to achieve it,” Trump said, adding there will be more phone calls and predicting an in-person meeting between representatives of both countries “very soon.”
Trump said there are “important points of agreement,” described the talks so far as “perfect,” and said that if they continue, “this problem, this conflict will end.”
The U.S. president stressed that any deal with Iran must prevent the country from obtaining a nuclear weapon.
“We do not want to see any nuclear bomb, any nuclear weapon,” Trump said, adding that the United States will seize Iran’s enriched uranium.
Hours earlier, on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump announced he had ordered his Department of War to postpone attacks on Iran’s energy infrastructure for five days to allow room for negotiations.
“I am pleased to report that the United States of America, and the country of Iran, have had, over the last two days, very good and productive conversations regarding a complete and total resolution of our hostilities in the Middle East. Based on the tenor and tone of these in-depth, detailed, and constructive conversations, which will continue throughout the week,” he stated.
“I have instructed the Department of War to postpone any and all military strikes against Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure for a five-day period, subject to the success of the ongoing meetings and discussions,” he added.
