Venezuela: Essequibo agreement must satisfy both parties

Venezuelan Foreign Minister, Jorge Arreaza, emphasized today that any agreement to be adopted with Guyana on the Essequibo must be based on the 1966 Geneva Agreement and satisfy both nations.

Speaking to Venezolana de Televisión, Arreaza recalled that article 33 of the United Nations Charter (UN) clearly establishes the means to settle and find common ground for Venezuela's just claim on that territory. He explained that the aforementioned article also indicates the means to peaceful solution, conciliation, negotiation, investigation and judicial settlement.

He stressed that Guyana has wanted to ignore for some time until this moment, the Geneva arbitration award, the only one recognized by the Venezuelan Government.

'In the year 1982 the good offices were managed in order to advance the peaceful and decisive method, however, the current government of David Granger accuses us of attacking them militarily', which is false, said the head of the Venezuelan Diplomacy.

He argued that the neighboring country unilaterally brought to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) an arbitration that is not their responsibility, in view of this, he said, they sent a letter to the president of the entity Abdulqawi Ahmed Yusuf, informing him that they had no jurisdiction to take the controversy territorial.

'Venezuela is not participating in these ICJ events, we do not recognize that process,' he stressed.

With regard to the virtual hearing called the day before by The Hague, he pointed out that it was held under pressure from US multinationals and that the Bolivarian Government delivered a memorandum in which it rejects and notifies why it did not participate.

However, the foreign minister expressed his confidence in international organizations and international law.
