Syria, Korea, Ukraine and bilateral ties at Lavrov-Pompeo meeting

The conflict in Syria, the crisis in Ukraine, the dispute around the Korean peninsula and in Afghanistan today centered a meeting in New York of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his US peer, Michael Pompeo.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, both diplomats spoke for a period of one hour on a wide range of issues, within the framework of the 74th session of the UN General Assembly.

Lavrov stressed Russia is open to dialogue with the United States in several fields, but constructive cooperation is only possible on the basis of respecting interests of others, the official text states.

In this regard, the futility of attempts at sanctions and any other pressure on Russia was observed, which only affects the prospects for bilateral cooperation to solve key global problems and undermines global security, the document said.

Moscow also denounced the unacceptable nature of US actions by denying Russian representatives visas for multilateral events within the UN and for bilateral dialogue.

The ministers also discussed prospects for cooperation to resolve the situation in the Korean peninsula, Afghanistan and other regions of the world, says the statement of the meeting held behind closed doors.

Lavrov also expressed the hope that the new Ukrainian authorities be involved in the path of conscious implementation of the Minsk agreements of 2015 to end the Donbass conflict.

There is a general opinion that the basis for overcoming the Syrian conflict is a peaceful negotiation process under the auspices of the United Nations with the participation of all constructive forces, says the Russian Foreign Ministry.

For this, sovereignty of Syria must be respected, including maintenance of its territorial integrity and the final elimination of the terrorist foci, underlines an official text of the aforementioned dependence.

Issues on the state of bilateral ties were also addressed, the document said, issued one day after Washington announced new sanctions, now to punish those who guarantee Russia's fight against terrorism in Syria.
