Venezuela Slams EU Criticism

The Venezuelan Foreign Ministry has lashed out at the most recent round of criticism from the European Union.

The Venezuelan Ministry of Foreign Affairs has rejected criticism from European Union Vice President Federica Mogherini that the Venezuelan government has “increased the polarization of an already divided society.”

In a statement, Mogherini argued the suspension of Luisa Ortega as attorney general and the inauguration of the Constituent Assembly “have further weakened the prospects for a peaceful return to the democratic order in Venezuela.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has responded by arguing the statement shows the EU’s “marked partiality for the minority sector of the Venezuelan opposition.”

“The European Union seeks to make us believe that the decisions assumed by the sovereign National Constituent Assembly … entrusted by a historic majority of the heroic Venezuelan people, will reduce the possibility of a ‘a peaceful return to the democratic order,’ when it is well-known that the effect of these decisions will undoubtedly be the contrary to this nefarious prediction, ” the statement continued.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs went on to criticize the EU for failing to recognize the right-wing violent attacks against the Venezuelan government — including the recent attack against the Bolivarian National Guard.

“The European Union speaks of respecting the legitimate institutions of our country but contradictorily omits or makes invisible the subversive terrorist attempt and attack in the Paramacay Barracks.”

The EU’s harsh comments come as many sectors of the Venezuelan political opposition enroll in regional elections — a point the EU has ignored, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs added.

“We demand the EU and its leaders objectively inform themselves on the situation in Venezuela and recognize that a significant part of the Venezuelan opposition has agreed to participate in the next regional elections.”

“We reiterate our strict commitment to the principles of participatory and active democracy, respect for human rights and the will to resolve any difference through national dialogue.”
