China defends Constituent Assembly and urges not to intervene in Venezuela

AVN.- The Chinese government said the vote for the National Constituent Assembly last Sunday was "generally held smoothly" and asked other countries not to intervene in the internal affairs of the Latin American country.
"China always follows the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries and maintains that countries should handle their relations based on the principles of equal treatment, mutual respect and non-interference in each other's internal affairs," said a statement released by the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
"The National Constituent Assembly election in Venezuela was held smoothly on the whole. We have also taken note of the reactions of relevant parties," added the note.
In the statement, the Chinese Ministry expressed their wish that the government and opposition "can hold peaceful dialogues within the legal framework and resolve relevant issues in an orderly manner so as to maintain national stability and economic and social development."
"China believes that the Venezuelan government and people are capable of handling their internal affairs. It serves the interests of all relevant parties for Venezuela to maintain stable development," the diplomatic note concludes.
The United States announced sanctions against the government of President Nicolas Maduro a day after the elections, while yesterday the European Union announced it did not recognize the Constituent Assembly and warned that it would intensify its response "in case democratic principles are further undermined and the Venezuelan Constitution is not respected."
Since the last decade, China has been one of the most important trading partners of Venezuela, which became the main destination for Chinese investments in Latin America, given the communist regime's special interest in Venezuelan crude oil.
